An earlier page (21) contains the following:\u00a0\u201cBecause situation comedies (known hereafter as sitcoms) have become the blue chips of the business, we are in for even more of them this year. Of 35 new shows in evening prime time more than half are sitcoms\u2014and these in addition to <em>Beverly Hillbillies<\/em> and 14 others that carry over from last year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Should we believe that Martin coined &#8220;sitcom&#8221; in 1964 or was his use of it in a popular, consumer magazine just an indication\u00a0of its widespread use in the TV industry by that time? The answer is unclear and I have not been able\u2014so far\u2014to track &#8220;sitcom&#8221; down in\u00a0<em>Variety<\/em> or other trade magazines. My friend Lang Thompson, however, did find a piece in the <em>Chicago Tribune<\/em> that suggests that 1964 was about the time when &#8220;sitcom&#8221; emerged from industry discourse into popular speech. Columnist Larry Wolters writes, &#8220;A score of situation comedies (they call them &#8216;sitcoms&#8217; in the trade) have arrived and more are ahead.&#8221;[3] Wolters&#8217;s comment suggests that &#8220;sitcom&#8221; was still a new term to his readers, but not a term he himself (or Martin in\u00a0<em>Life<\/em>) coined.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tvcrit.com\/sitcom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Wolters-Larry-Enough-Comedy-on-TV-for-a-Good-Cry-Chicago-Tribune-19641004.jpg\" rel=\"prettyPhoto[152]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-156\" src=\"https:\/\/tvcrit.com\/sitcom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Wolters-Larry-Enough-Comedy-on-TV-for-a-Good-Cry-Chicago-Tribune-19641004-444x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Larry Wolters on the sitcom\" width=\"444\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tvcrit.com\/sitcom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Wolters-Larry-Enough-Comedy-on-TV-for-a-Good-Cry-Chicago-Tribune-19641004-444x1024.jpg 444w, https:\/\/tvcrit.com\/sitcom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Wolters-Larry-Enough-Comedy-on-TV-for-a-Good-Cry-Chicago-Tribune-19641004-130x300.jpg 130w, https:\/\/tvcrit.com\/sitcom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Wolters-Larry-Enough-Comedy-on-TV-for-a-Good-Cry-Chicago-Tribune-19641004.jpg 1437w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 444px) 100vw, 444px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The origin of &#8220;situation comedy&#8221; is no clearer than that of &#8220;sitcom,&#8221; but it is evident that it was in use way before 1964. In fact, a 1947\u00a0<em>Variety<\/em> article proclaims, &#8220;Gag comedy [radio] programs still rate over farce situation or realistic situation comedy shows, judged by a survey of the season now closing. As for gag shows, the &#8216;broad smart comedy&#8217; type has a far greater appeal than the &#8216;broad corny comedy&#8217; types.&#8221;[2] I must confess that at this stage of my research I cannot explain\u00a0what distinguishes <em>farce<\/em> situation comedy from <em>realistic<\/em> situation comedy, but, nonetheless, it&#8217;s obvious that comedy based on narrative, on <em>situation<\/em>, has long been contrasted with comedy deriving its humor from gags (and a loose or nonexistent narrative).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_154\" style=\"width: 284px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/tvcrit.com\/sitcom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/variety-111655-detail.jpg\" rel=\"prettyPhoto[152]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-154\" class=\"size-full wp-image-154\" src=\"https:\/\/tvcrit.com\/sitcom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/variety-111655-detail.jpg\" alt=\"Variety article\" width=\"274\" height=\"757\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tvcrit.com\/sitcom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/variety-111655-detail.jpg 274w, https:\/\/tvcrit.com\/sitcom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/variety-111655-detail-109x300.jpg 109w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 274px) 100vw, 274px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-154\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8220;Situation Comedy Becoming Extinct, Bob Hope Avers&#8221;<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In fact, situation comedy was so well established on radio and TV before the 1950s that it was in danger of wearing out its welcome.
